Swim raises R20 000 for disadvantaged

Around 400 swimmers raised close to R20 000 at a race in Grabouw, near Cape Town, on Sunday 12 February which was part sponsored by Similasan.

Top SA open water swimmer, Philip Emslie, took double honours by winning the 3km and one mile races at the annual Brian Curtis Mile.

Emslie, 27, who will represent SA at the World Masters Champs in Italy in June, described both races as “tough but enjoyable”. “I put my head down in both races and managed to break away from the pack,” he said. He finished the 3km in 38.10 minutes and the mile in 21:32.

Nineteen year old Dominique Dreyding was the first female home in both the 3km (40:30min) and the mile 23:36. About 350 swimmers, mostly wearing only caps, goggles and Speedo costumes, participated.

The event, held at the picturesque Eikenhof dam near Grabouw, is held annually in memory of Brian Curtis, one of the founding directors of Cadiz Holdings Limited and a keen swimmer who died tragically in a motorcycle accident in 1998.

The event is part of the Cadiz Swim Series – a host of swims in and around the Western Cape which raise funds for good causes. Sunday’s race raised R20 000 for the Open Water Swimming Development Trust which supports disadvantaged swimmers.

Similasan was a prize sponsor at the event and swimmers were educated about the Similasan range and on Swimmer’s Ear in particular.

Similasan’s Earache Relief is the biggest selling eardrop of its kind in the US due to its efficacy in treating swimmers ear and is available in SA at most major pharmacies.
